Carrie is an Assistant Professor at Sewanee: The University of the South. Her research is motivated by the desire to better understand inequality in our political system. Equality is among the central tenets of American democracy and a better understanding of groups’ inclusion in (or exclusion from) the political process is fundamental to understanding participation and civic engagement. Moreover, the underrepresentation of women and racial and ethnic minorities has implications for the quality of discourse in government as well as the policy outcomes we see. To examine the permeability of government, she examines behavioral, electoral, and institutional conditions that make it more or less difficult for historically marginalized groups to gain access to government representation.
